Freddie

6 × 8 in.
Ink on Paper

This is my version of Freddie Mercury. Rather than trying to create a perfectly realistic portrait, I wanted to capture him through my own drawing style while keeping enough of his features and personality for him to still feel immediately recognizable.

Freddie has such a distinct face and presence that even when simplified into heavy black lines, exaggerated features, and imperfect shapes, there is still something unmistakably him. His mustache, expression, hair, and eyes carry most of the portrait while everything else is stripped back.

I like drawing recognizable people and characters this way because I am not interested in making an exact copy of a photograph. I want the person to pass through my hand first. The imperfections become part of the portrait rather than something that needs to be corrected.

There is also something fitting about drawing Freddie this way. He built an identity around being completely himself, and this portrait does not try to make him polished or perfect. It is simply Freddie as I see him, drawn the way I draw.
