The Truth Is Out There is about a guy who is completely convinced that there is something bigger going on. He is standing in the middle of a crowd holding a giant sign about aliens and UFOs, determined to expose the truth to anyone willing to listen.
The funny part is that the truth is quite literally already surrounding him.
There is an alien casually standing beside an overflowing trash can. There is garbage everywhere. A cat is sitting on a dead rat. There are bottles, food, a bong, strange characters, and complete chaos happening only a few feet away from him. There is so much weird shit happening in his immediate surroundings that an alien might actually be one of the least concerning things there.
But he does not seem bothered by any of it.
He is looking for something bigger.
I think that is what makes this painting more than just a stupid conspiracy joke to me. People can become so obsessed with finding some hidden explanation for the world that they stop looking at what is directly in front of them. We search for secret meanings, conspiracies, answers, signs, and explanations while sometimes ignoring the completely obvious problems surrounding us.
At the same time, maybe he is right.
There is literally an alien standing behind him.
That contradiction is my favorite part. Everyone looking at him might think he is crazy, but the painting actually proves him correct. The truth really is out there. He just happens to be so focused on convincing everyone else that he does not realize he has already found it.
There is something funny about desperately searching for answers while standing directly beside the answer.
Maybe we do that more often than we realize.
Sometimes the truth is not hidden at all. We are just too busy looking somewhere else to notice it.
