Most of the time, flowers like these aren't supposed to be the main attraction.

They're filler.

They're the tiny flowers tucked between roses and larger blooms to make a bouquet feel fuller. You notice the roses first. These are just supposed to fill the empty spaces.

For this piece, I wanted them to be everything.

There isn't one giant flower in the center demanding your attention. Instead, there are dozens of these tiny stems standing together. Individually, each one is incredibly small and easy to overlook. Together, they completely fill the frame.

That's why I like this one.

The Little Things is about all of the small things in life that don't seem particularly important while they're happening but eventually become the things that make up most of our lives.

A conversation with somebody you love. Your dog being excited when you come home. Making yourself flowers for absolutely no reason. A song you keep replaying. Laughing at something stupid. Sitting somewhere alone and actually enjoying it. Creating something nobody asked you to create.

None of those moments necessarily feels enormous while you're living it.

But put enough of them together and suddenly you've built a life.

The white flowers also traditionally carry ideas of innocence, simplicity, purity, and sincerity. But what interests me more is their role in an actual bouquet. They're usually there to support something considered more beautiful or important.

Here, there's nothing for them to support.

They get to be important on their own.

Even the way they aged matters to me. They aren't bright white anymore. They've dried into creams, browns, and muted colors. Some are missing petals. Some stems bend differently than others. They're no longer perfect little flowers.

But together, they're still beautiful.

Maybe that's part of why I preserve flowers in the first place. Something doesn't have to remain exactly as it was to still have value.

Sometimes the background deserves to become the foreground.

Sometimes the filler deserves the entire frame.

Sometimes the little things are actually the whole thing.
