Pimp Daddy Pleasure: Your One-Stop Shop for Bad Decisions
Year: 2023
Medium: Watercolor, hand-cut paper, and black-painted outlines in a floating frame
Dimensions: Approximately 11 × 14 inches (artwork; frame dimensions may differ)
Inspiration: Outrageous characters, street hustlers, adult humor, questionable business ventures, and the ridiculous lengths people will go to have a good time.
Everybody knows somebody who seems to have a connection for absolutely everything.
Need something? They know a guy.
Need something a little more questionable? They definitely know a guy.
Need something that probably shouldn't be discussed in public? Well, conveniently, they are that guy.
Allow me to introduce Pimp Daddy Pleasure.
He's an entrepreneur, a businessman, a gentleman of questionable morals, and quite possibly the last person you should trust with your money.
But damn, does he know how to have a good time.
I created this painting in 2023 because I thought the idea of a ridiculously overdressed drug dealer carrying around an entire portable catalog of recreational substances was hilarious.
Instead of lurking around some dark alley looking suspicious, this man has decided to embrace the professionalism of his chosen career.
He's got the hat, the sunglasses, the jewelry, the expensive-looking suit, and an entire display case of products that would probably make a police officer very interested in asking him a few questions.
He's not just selling drugs.
He's selling an experience.
Or at least that's what he'd tell you.
The painting features a cartoon character dressed in an extravagant lavender suit with matching pants, a wide-brimmed cowboy-style hat, gold accessories, and a fur-trimmed coat. His expression is serious and confident, as though he's presenting the opportunity of a lifetime.
Beside him is an open display case filled with an assortment of suspicious-looking products, smoking accessories, and other items associated with recreational drug culture.
I love the idea that he's treating this entire situation like a legitimate business presentation.
You can almost imagine him walking up to someone and saying, "Good evening, my friend. Are you interested in making some absolutely terrible decisions tonight?"
And then immediately pulling out his catalog.
What makes the character funny to me is how seriously he seems to take himself.
He's not embarrassed by his profession. He's not trying to hide what he's doing. In his mind, he's providing a valuable service to the community.
After all, people want to have fun.
And Pimp Daddy Pleasure is apparently determined to make sure they do.
Whether or not those people will still consider it fun the following morning is an entirely different question.
But that's tomorrow's problem.
One of my favorite parts of this piece is how I constructed it.
Like some of my other experimental artwork from 2023, I wanted to create something that felt more dimensional than a traditional painting.
I used watercolor to create the illustration, then carefully cut out the character and his merchandise rather than leaving them on a conventional rectangular sheet of paper.
I outlined the cut edges with black paint to make the illustration stand out more clearly against the background.
By placing the cut-out artwork inside a floating frame, I was able to give the character a sense of depth, almost as though he's standing inside a little display window.
I especially like the contrast between the traditional white frame and the ridiculous subject matter.
From a distance, someone might think they're looking at a charming little illustration of a well-dressed gentleman.
Then they get closer.
And suddenly they're staring at a cartoon drug dealer presenting an entire inventory of ways to ruin their weekend.
That's exactly the kind of surprise I enjoy creating with my artwork.
I love taking something that might normally be considered inappropriate, uncomfortable, or socially unacceptable and presenting it in a way that's colorful, humorous, and almost innocent.
There's something entertaining about making a character who is objectively involved in questionable activities look like the most respectable businessman in town.
And in a strange way, I think there's a little social commentary hidden in that.
People are often willing to overlook questionable behavior when it's presented with enough confidence, charm, and professionalism.
Put someone in a nice suit, give them a convincing sales pitch, and suddenly their terrible ideas start sounding like incredible opportunities.
Pimp Daddy Pleasure understands this better than anyone.
He's essentially the world's least trustworthy salesman dressed like the world's most successful entrepreneur.
But underneath all the jokes, this painting also represents something I love about creating art.
Sometimes I just want to invent ridiculous characters.
I don't always want to paint something emotional, serious, or deeply personal. Sometimes I want to make something that makes me laugh while I'm creating it.
And I think that's an important part of artistic freedom.
Not everything has to be beautiful in a traditional sense. Not everything has to carry some profound philosophical message.
Sometimes an idea is worth painting simply because it's absurd.
This piece is a celebration of that kind of creativity.
It's silly, inappropriate, colorful, and completely ridiculous.
And I wouldn't change a thing.
Pimp Daddy Pleasure doesn't guarantee you'll make good decisions.
He just guarantees you'll have plenty of options.
