Acrylic on Canvas

Veggies Rule is basically a ridiculous little comic about a pear trying to go to the gym and being told he cannot come in because it is a vegetables only gym. The carrots, tomatoes, and other vegetables have their own little world, their own rules, and apparently they take those rules way too seriously.

Instead of accepting that he does not belong, the pear sneaks his way in and starts causing problems. He meets another vegetable, starts questioning the rules, and eventually decides that if the sign is what keeps him out, then the sign is what needs to change. By the end, the original gym sign has been rewritten to say GMO.

I like the idea because it is incredibly stupid, but underneath the joke there is something I actually relate to. Sometimes people create completely arbitrary rules about who belongs somewhere and who does not. You can spend all your energy trying to convince those people that you deserve to be included, or you can stop asking for permission and make your own place.

The pear does not suddenly become a vegetable. He is still completely out of place. He just refuses to accept that being different means he has to leave.

There is also something funny about turning GMO into the solution. Instead of changing himself to fit their definition, he changes the definition until there is room for him.

Sometimes when you do not fit in, the answer is not changing yourself. Sometimes you just change the sign.
