2022
8 × 10 in. Shadow Box
Marker on Paper, Cut from Original Journal
Original / 1 of 1
This one really isn't that deep.
I was bored.
I was confused.
So apparently I drew this.
Confused & Bored came from the same journal I used to doodle in during 2022. I wasn't trying to build a collection or create something that would eventually end up framed. I was just drawing because I had nothing else to do and wanted to see where the pen took me.
The distorted face has a very Picasso-esque feeling to it. The features don't completely agree with one another. The face seems to turn in different directions at once. An eye appears where you don't necessarily expect it. The nose stretches across the face. Spirals float around the figure without really explaining what they're doing there.
And honestly, that's pretty accurate to what confusion feels like.
Your thoughts don't always line up. One part of your brain is going one direction while another part is somewhere completely different. You can stare at something forever and somehow understand it less than when you started.
The spirals became a simple way of showing that mental mess. They float around the character almost like thoughts that haven't figured out what they're supposed to become yet.
But boredom is just as important to this piece.
I think boredom gets underestimated.
When there's nothing happening, your brain starts making its own entertainment. You doodle. You imagine things. You make stupid characters. You draw a face that doesn't make any anatomical sense simply because nobody is stopping you.
There was no plan here.
And that's probably why I like it now.
Looking back at these old journal pages, I'm realizing that a lot of what I do today started with exactly this kind of drawing. I wasn't trying to be an artist.
I was just bored enough to create something.
Sometimes that's all the reason you need.
