This is what happens when I take a word way too literally.
Pothead is a miniature comic about a guy who buys some pot, smokes it, and then quite literally becomes a pothead.
That's it.
The panels follow the whole transformation. It starts with the conversation: “Pot?” “Yea.” “Enjoy!!” Then comes the weed, the rolling papers, the joint, the smoking, and eventually the consequences.
Except instead of getting hungry or sitting on the couch for three hours, the top of his head opens up and plants start growing out of it.
He smoked pot. Now he's a pothead.
I made this in 2023 when I was playing around with characters, comics, visual jokes, and taking normal expressions and turning them into something absurdly literal.
That's something I still love doing.
Language is weird when you actually stop and think about it. We use words like pothead without thinking about what they would look like if they were literal. My brain apparently decided the answer was a guy walking around with an actual garden growing out of his skull.
The comic format was perfect for it because I didn't want to show only the final joke. I wanted there to be a stupid little journey to get there. You can follow this guy from being offered weed all the way to his botanical transformation.
And unlike some of my work, there isn't a hidden emotional tragedy underneath it.
I'm not trying to make a serious statement about marijuana.
I'm not warning you about drugs.
It's a visual pun.
That's one of my favorite things about looking back at my older work. Even before I really thought of myself as an artist, I was already doing a lot of the same things I do now: making characters, telling tiny stories, taking stupid ideas way too far, and creating something simply because the thought made me laugh.
Sometimes that's enough.
He wanted pot.
He got pot.
He became a pothead.
I don't know what else he expected.
